Experience the dramatic Umbwe Route beneath the bright night sky during this 7-day Kilimanjaro full moon hiking and trekking adventure. You will begin on a quiet trail through the thick southern rainforest, follow the steep Umbwe Ridge and spend an essential acclimatization day at Barranco Camp before trekking through Karanga and Barafu. The itinerary is planned so that your summit attempt may take place close to the full moon period, creating a memorable atmosphere as moonlight illuminates the upper slopes, glaciers and surrounding mountain landscape. Our experienced guides will monitor your altitude response, maintain a careful trekking rhythm and prepare you for the long overnight journey to Uhuru Peak. This adventure is ideal for fit hikers seeking challenging terrain, fewer crowds during the opening stages and a distinctive nighttime summit experience.
Walking Distance: Approximately 10.2 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 5½–7 hours
Entry Elevation: Umbwe Gate at approximately 1,650 m
Night Elevation: Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,870 m
Vertical Ascent: Approximately 1,220 m
Habitat Zone: Humid montane rainforest
Your full moon Kilimanjaro adventure will begin at Umbwe Gate, where our mountain crew will complete registration, organize the equipment and introduce you to the trekking plan. You will enter a thick forest of towering trees, twisted roots, ferns and moss-covered branches before following a steep route along the Umbwe Ridge. The sheltered woodland creates a peaceful beginning, while the demanding ascent introduces you to the character of the trail. Our guides will encourage short steps, regular hydration and controlled breathing until you arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp.
Walking Distance: Approximately 6.2 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 5–6½ hours
Morning Elevation: Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,870 m
Night Elevation: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,970 m
Vertical Ascent: Approximately 1,100 m
Habitat Zone: Heather, moorland and alpine-desert transition
You will leave the upper forest and continue along the narrowing Umbwe Ridge as the landscape becomes increasingly open. Giant heather and low shrubs will replace the rainforest, revealing views of deep valleys and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers when the weather is clear. Because the day involves considerable altitude gain, our guides will maintain a deliberate pace and observe your breathing, energy and general condition. You will eventually enter the Barranco Valley and reach camp beneath the enormous Barranco Wall.
Walking Distance: Approximately 3.4 km
Expected Activity Time: Approximately 2½–4 hours
Camp Elevation: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,970 m
Acclimatization Height: Approximately 4,180–4,280 m
Sleeping Elevation: Return to approximately 3,970 m
Habitat Zone: Upper moorland and rocky alpine desert
Today will be dedicated to acclimatization, recovery and preparation for the higher stages of your full moon trek. When your health and weather conditions permit, you will follow our guide on a gentle ascent to a higher point before returning to sleep at Barranco Camp. This activity allows your body to experience additional elevation while benefiting from a lower sleeping altitude. You will also have time to enjoy the unusual giant groundsels, photograph the Barranco Wall and observe the changing mountain light as evening approaches.
Walking Distance: Approximately 5.3 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 4½–6 hours
Morning Elevation: Barranco Camp at approximately 3,970 m
Night Elevation: Karanga Camp at approximately 4,020 m
Overall Elevation Change: Approximately 50 m net gain with repeated descents and ascents
Habitat Zone: Rocky alpine desert
You will begin by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep scrambling section that requires careful hand placement, balance and patience rather than technical climbing equipment. Our guides will lead you through the narrow passages and assist at points where additional support is useful. After reaching the upper ridge, you will enjoy wide views of Kilimanjaro’s southern ice fields before following an undulating trail across several valleys. The final section descends into Karanga Valley and climbs again to your campsite.
Walking Distance: Approximately 4.8 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 3½–5 hours
Morning Elevation: Karanga Camp at approximately 4,020 m
Night Elevation: Barafu Camp at approximately 4,650 m
Vertical Ascent: Approximately 630 m
Habitat Zone: Barren high-altitude desert
You will trek from Karanga through an exposed volcanic landscape toward Barafu Camp, the final staging point for your moonlit summit attempt. The route becomes increasingly dry, cold and windswept as vegetation disappears from the upper slopes. Although the distance is moderate, the thin air will require slow movement and careful energy conservation. After reaching Barafu, you will eat, rest and arrange your thermal layers, headlamp, gloves, trekking poles and summit essentials. Our lead guide will explain the overnight schedule and review your readiness before you sleep.
Walking Distance: Approximately 17.2 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 12½–16 hours
Departure Elevation: Barafu Camp at approximately 4,650 m
Maximum Elevation: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m
Night Elevation: Mweka Camp at approximately 3,090 m
Elevation Movement: Approximately 1,245 m ascent followed by around 2,805 m descent
Habitat Zone: Arctic summit terrain descending into alpine desert and moorland
Your summit journey will begin near midnight, ideally beneath the bright glow of the full moon. Moonlight may illuminate the volcanic slopes and surrounding glaciers, although your headlamp will remain essential throughout the night. You will move slowly over loose scree toward Stella Point while our guides monitor your temperature, energy and response to the extreme altitude. From the crater rim, you will continue toward Uhuru Peak and may witness sunrise spreading across the mountain landscape. After a brief celebration and summit photographs, you will descend to Barafu for a short recovery stop before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Walking Distance: Approximately 10.3 km
Expected Trail Time: Approximately 3½–5 hours
Morning Elevation: Mweka Camp at approximately 3,090 m
Exit Elevation: Mweka Gate at approximately 1,650 m
Vertical Descent: Approximately 1,440 m
Habitat Zone: Lush montane rainforest
After breakfast, you will complete the final descent through the green Mweka rainforest. The warmer air, rich vegetation and increased oxygen will create a noticeable contrast with the summit environment. You may hear forest birds or see monkeys while following the often damp trail toward the park exit. At Mweka Gate, you will complete the departure formalities and receive a certificate based on the highest point reached. Our driver will then transfer you to Moshi for rest and celebration.

Our team works backward from the expected summit night so that your ascent from Barafu Camp may take place close to the full moon. You should arrive in Moshi before the trekking departure date to complete your briefing, equipment check and final preparation.
No. The moon may be full, but clouds, fog, snowfall or changing mountain weather can reduce visibility. Your headlamp will remain compulsory because natural moonlight cannot be relied upon as your only source of light.
No. Moonlight may improve the nighttime atmosphere and offer some additional visibility, but it does not reduce the altitude, steep terrain, cold temperatures or physical demands of the summit ascent.
Full moon summit periods can attract more trekkers than ordinary dates. However, the Umbwe Route normally begins on a quieter trail before joining other routes around Barranco Camp and the Southern Circuit.
Our itinerary will be arranged so that the summit attempt takes place as close as reasonably possible to the lunar event. The moon can still appear bright during the nights immediately before and after the exact full moon date.
The brightness may be noticeable when the sky is clear, especially around Barranco, Karanga or Barafu. You may bring a comfortable sleeping mask if you are sensitive to light and want to improve your rest inside the tent.
Yes. Smartphones and compact cameras may capture moonlit scenery, mountain silhouettes and summit moments. However, night photography quality depends on your device, stability, weather and available light. A small tripod can be useful but should remain lightweight.
Yes. You can book a private full moon Umbwe trek for yourself, a couple, friends or a small group. Private trekking allows more personal guiding attention, although camps and summit trails may still be shared with other climbers.
You may select the next available lunar departure or join a regular Umbwe Route trek. A climb outside the exact full moon period can still offer excellent stars, sunrise views and memorable nighttime trekking conditions.
The Umbwe Route gains altitude quickly during the opening days. The additional Barranco day allows your body to recover, complete a controlled acclimatization walk and improve its preparation before you continue toward Karanga, Barafu and the overnight summit trek.
