Driving Distance: 125 km
Driving Time: 3–4 hours
Hiking Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: Lemosho Gate (2,100 m / 6,890 ft) → Big Tree Camp (2,780 m / 9,120 ft)
After breakfast, drive to Lemosho Gate where park registration is completed before starting your climb. Today's 6 km hike follows a gentle rainforest trail beneath towering trees, giant ferns, and moss-covered branches. Walking at a comfortable pace, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, watch for black-and-white colobus monkeys, and listen to the sounds of tropical birds before arriving at Big Tree Camp.
Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest
Hiking Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Altitude: 2,780 m (9,120 ft) → 3,505 m (11,500 ft)
Today's 8 km trek gradually leaves the rainforest behind as you enter Kilimanjaro's heath and moorland zone. The trail offers magnificent views of the Shira Plateau while passing giant heather, wildflowers, and volcanic rocks. Regular rest stops allow you to enjoy the scenery and maintain a comfortable rhythm before reaching Shira 1 Camp.
Vegetation Zone: Heath and Moorland
Hiking Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: 3,505 m (11,500 ft) → 3,850 m (12,630 ft)
Cover approximately 7 km across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the most spectacular areas on Mount Kilimanjaro. This shorter hiking day provides valuable acclimatization while allowing plenty of opportunities to admire panoramic views, ancient volcanic formations, and unique alpine vegetation. A relaxed afternoon at camp helps prepare your body for the higher elevations ahead.
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Moorland
Hiking Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Altitude: Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m / 12,630 ft) → Lava Tower (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) → Barranco Camp (3,960 m / 12,990 ft)
Today's 10 km hike is one of the most important for acclimatization. Climb gradually to the impressive Lava Tower before descending into the beautiful Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adjust naturally to the altitude while you enjoy dramatic volcanic landscapes, giant groundsels, giant lobelias, and breathtaking glacier views.
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Hiking Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: 3,960 m (12,990 ft) → 4,035 m (13,238 ft)
Today's 5 km walk begins with the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks steep, it is a non-technical climb completed safely with guidance from your experienced mountain team. Continue across rocky ridges and scenic valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp, where you'll have plenty of time to relax and prepare for the final stages of your expedition.
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Hiking Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: 4,035 m (13,238 ft) → 4,673 m (15,331 ft)
The 4 km trek to Barafu Camp is relatively short, giving you ample time to conserve energy for summit day. The trail crosses Kilimanjaro's rugged alpine desert, where rocky terrain and sweeping mountain views create an unforgettable atmosphere. After arriving at camp, enjoy an early dinner, attend your summit briefing, and rest before the overnight ascent.

Summit day is the highlight of your adventure, covering approximately 17 km. Begin your ascent shortly after midnight, climbing steadily beneath a sky filled with stars before reaching Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your success with unforgettable sunrise views before descending safely to Barafu Camp for a short break and continuing to Mweka Camp for your final overnight stay.
