6:00 AM to 11:30 AM Road Transfer and Countryside Birding

Leave Dar es Salaam early and keep binoculars accessible as the road passes through increasingly rural surroundings. Even before reaching the park, roadside landscapes can provide an introduction to Tanzania's common birdlife and different habitat types. Your guide will keep the primary focus on reaching Mikumi comfortably while pointing out interesting species when practical.

12:00 PM to 2:30 PM Lunch and Birding Preparation

Arrive near Mikumi for lunch and prepare binoculars, cameras and field guides before entering the national park. Discuss birding interests with your guide so the afternoon can move at an appropriate pace rather than concentrating only on large mammals.

3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Afternoon Birding and Wildlife Drive

Explore open grassland and woodland edges where raptors, ground birds and smaller species can be observed alongside elephants, giraffes and grazing mammals. Stop frequently when bird activity is interesting and listen for calls that may reveal species hidden in vegetation. Continue until sunset before transferring to your midrange lodge.

6:30 AM to 10:00 AM Early Morning Birding

Enter Mikumi during one of the most active periods for birds. Move slowly along woodland edges and open plains, scanning both the ground and tree canopy while listening for calls. Raptors can also become visible from high perches as daylight strengthens.

10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Water Areas and Picnic Birding

Continue toward habitats associated with water, where a different collection of species may be encountered. Large mammals remain part of the safari, but smaller birds are given equal attention rather than being passed quickly. Stop for lunch around midday and keep binoculars nearby because bird activity often continues around picnic areas.

2:00 PM to 5:30 PM Afternoon Plains and Raptor Search

Resume the drive through grassland and woodland while watching for soaring raptors and birds becoming active again as heat decreases. Elephants, giraffes and antelopes add variety between bird sightings. Return to the lodge after a complete day combining birding and traditional wildlife viewing.

7:00 AM to 9:30 AM Transfer Toward Forest Habitat

Leave Mikumi after breakfast and travel toward Udzungwa, watching habitat change from savannah to green mountain vegetation. This ecological transition explains why the bird community in Udzungwa differs so strongly from what was seen in Mikumi.

10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Guided Forest Birding Walk

Meet a local guide and enter the forest quietly, listening for calls and watching movement through different canopy levels. Forest birding can require patience because visibility is more limited, but the experience becomes especially rewarding when species appear between the dense vegetation. Monkeys and butterflies add interest between bird encounters.

2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Mountain Forest and Stream Birding

Continue toward another forest section where streams, clearings and changes in vegetation create additional birding opportunities. Move slowly, stop frequently and allow the guide time to identify calls before advancing. Finish the walk during the afternoon and return to your midrange accommodation.

6:30 AM to 9:30 AM Dawn Forest Birding

Begin early while the forest is particularly active with calls and movement. Return to a productive habitat or explore another trail to increase the variety of species observed. Morning conditions can also provide excellent opportunities to watch primates and photograph birds in softer light.

9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Breakfast and Bird List Review

Return for breakfast and use the break to review the birds observed during the two Udzungwa sessions. Organise binoculars and cameras for the next destination while your guide prepares for the road transfer.

11:00 AM to 6:00 PM Journey to Ruaha

Travel through highland scenery toward the drier landscapes surrounding Ruaha. The habitat changes significantly during the journey and introduces the conditions that support a very different bird community from Udzungwa. Arrive in the evening and settle into your midrange accommodation.

10:00 AM to 2:00 PM River Corridor Birding and Picnic

Move toward seasonal rivers and water associated habitats, where bird diversity can change considerably. Spend time observing species around vegetation and open riverbeds before stopping for a picnic lunch. The slower birding pace also increases opportunities to notice smaller wildlife often overlooked on conventional game drives.

2:00 PM to 5:30 PM Afternoon Raptors and Big Game

Continue across open woodland while looking for raptors using thermals or elevated perches. Large mammals provide frequent interruptions to the birding programme, creating a balanced safari rather than a specialised bird trip that ignores other wildlife. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Spend late morning examining trees, riverbeds and open areas for species not recorded during the previous day. Stop for lunch and review the growing bird list while enjoying the wilderness surroundings.

2:00 PM to 5:30 PM Final Ruaha Birding Session

Use the afternoon to revisit productive birding areas or search specifically for habitats that may hold species still missing from your observations. Keep the programme flexible because an unexpected wildlife encounter may also become the highlight of the final Ruaha day.

5:30 AM to 10:30 AM Early Departure and Roadside Observation

Begin the long transfer toward Mikumi. Binoculars can remain accessible for interesting roadside birdlife during suitable stops, although the priority is making steady progress toward the park.

10:30 AM to 2:30 PM Journey and Lunch Break

Continue through the Iringa region and stop for lunch. The changing vegetation offers a final opportunity to appreciate how bird habitats vary across Southern Tanzania.

3:30 PM to 6:00 PM Evening Mikumi Birding

If timing allows, enter Mikumi for a short afternoon drive and concentrate on species associated with open plains and woodland edges. Returning after several days away may reveal bird behaviour or species that were not encountered during the first part of the safari.

Return for breakfast and take time to review memorable species and wildlife encounters from Mikumi, Udzungwa and Ruaha. Prepare luggage and equipment for the road journey.

11:00 AM to Evening Return to Dar es Salaam

Travel back toward Dar es Salaam with lunch and comfort stops along the route. Arrival later in the day concludes an eight day journey through several of Southern Tanzania's most contrasting birding and wildlife environments.
