This 8-day Kenya midrange birdwatching safari combines the grassland birds and raptors of Masai Mara, the lakeshore and woodland species of Lake Nakuru, the freshwater birds of Lake Naivasha and the wetland species of Amboseli National Park. You will also enjoy excellent opportunities to see lions, rhinos, elephants, hippos and other large mammals. Your Kenya midrange birdwatching safari begins with an approximately 280-to-300-kilometre drive from Nairobi to Masai Mara, taking 5½ to 6½ hours. During safe stops, our guide may point out roadside raptors and open-country birds. After lunch and check-in, you will begin an afternoon birding drive lasting 2½ to 3 hours, looking for secretary birds, bustards, rollers, lapwings and vultures alongside giraffes and elephants.

You will spend approximately 8 to 10 hours exploring Masai Mara and may cover between 80 and 150 kilometres. Our birdwatching safari will visit grasslands, acacia woodland, seasonal streams and river areas. Possible sightings include southern ground hornbills, martial eagles, bateleurs, vultures, bee-eaters, storks and larks. Lions, cheetahs, elephants and buffaloes may also be observed.

Full-Day Masai Mara Birding Safari

Another full day gives you time to explore different Masai Mara habitats and add more species to your checklist. You may travel approximately 70 to 140 kilometres over 8 to 10 hours. Our guide will concentrate on raptors, grassland birds, river species and woodland birds while also following major wildlife sightings. A picnic lunch will be served inside the reserve.

Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru

After breakfast, you will travel approximately 260 kilometres to Lake Nakuru in 5 to 6½ hours. After lunch and check-in, your Kenya birdwatching safari continues with an afternoon drive of around 3 hours. You may see pelicans, cormorants, fish eagles, herons, kingfishers and seasonal flamingos, together with rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes and baboons.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha

Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha

After a morning birding and game drive lasting approximately 2½ to 3 hours, you will travel 80 kilometres to Lake Naivasha in about 1½ to 2 hours. In the afternoon, an optional boat ride offers opportunities to observe fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, jacanas, herons and kingfishers. A Crescent Island walk can add grassland birds and herbivores to the experience.

Following an early breakfast, you will travel approximately 320 kilometres to Amboseli in 6 to 7 hours. Safe roadside birdwatching stops may be made where timing permits. After arrival and lunch, a short evening drive may introduce you to ostriches, secretary birds, raptors and wetland species near Amboseli’s marshes.

You will spend 7 to 9 hours birding across Amboseli, covering approximately 60 to 120 kilometres. The route may include marshes, plains, woodland and seasonal lakes. Possible sightings include flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, crowned cranes, egrets, herons and raptors. Elephants, hippos, buffaloes and other mammals add further interest to the day.
