8 Days Luxury Kenya Photography Safari from Samburu to Maasai Mara

Your professional driver-guide will collect you from your Nairobi hotel, residence, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson Airport between approximately 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM. After a safari briefing and careful loading of your camera equipment, you will travel north through central Kenya’s agricultural highlands, roadside towns and changing natural landscapes. Stops will be arranged for refreshments, lunch, washroom use and authorised landscape photography. As you approach Samburu, greener highland scenery gradually changes into dry plains, rocky hills and acacia scrub. After arriving at your luxury lodge or tented camp, you will check in, enjoy a late lunch and prepare your equipment. When arrival time, park-entry validity and lodge location permit, a short afternoon photography drive may introduce elephants, reticulated giraffes, zebras, antelopes and warm northern sunset light.

After an early breakfast, you will leave with a picnic lunch or follow a divided morning-and-afternoon programme depending on lodge location and your photography priorities. Your guide will search Samburu’s dry plains, rocky terrain, acacia habitats and the Ewaso Nyiro River environment for the region’s distinctive wildlife. Possible subjects include Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks browsing upright, Beisa oryx, Somali ostriches, elephants, lions, leopards and numerous birds. The guide will consider sunlight, backgrounds, animal movement and ethical vehicle positioning instead of rushing from one sighting to another. The riverine vegetation can provide valuable contrasts between dry northern landscapes and greener wildlife gathering areas. You will wake early for breakfast and prepare for lodge check-out. When the confirmed entry arrangements and departure schedule allow, your guide may include a short morning or exit photography drive for species not captured during the previous day. You will then travel south through changing highland landscapes toward Lake Nakuru. The route may pass ranchland, cultivated areas, towns and Great Rift Valley scenery, providing opportunities for authorised roadside and landscape photography. Lunch, refreshment and washroom stops will be arranged during the journey. After arriving at your luxury Lake Nakuru accommodation, you will check in, charge batteries, clean lenses, back up photographs and rest before the following morning’s rhino and woodland photography session.

After an early breakfast, you will begin a focused Lake Nakuru photography drive through woodland, open grassland and lakeshore environments. Your guide will search for white or black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, zebras, waterbucks and birds. Pelicans, cormorants and flamingos may be present depending on water and feeding conditions. The park’s greener vegetation provides very different backgrounds from Samburu’s dry scenery, allowing you to create a more varied photographic portfolio. After the game drive, you will return for check-out and lunch before travelling to Lake Naivasha. On arrival, you will check in at your luxury lakeside lodge and may enjoy relaxed sunset photography around the property or an optional boat session when it is included and operating conditions are suitable.

Your morning may begin with a boat photography safari lasting approximately one to one and a half hours when included in the confirmed package. Possible subjects include hippos viewed from a safe distance, African fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers and peaceful water reflections. After returning to the lodge, you will have breakfast or complete check-out before beginning the journey to the Maasai Mara. The route passes Rift Valley farmland, rural towns, rolling hills and Maasai pastoral landscapes. Lunch, photography and comfort stops will be arranged along the way. Your guide will use recent wildlife information, natural light and road conditions to search for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas, jackals and vultures. The private vehicle allows patient observation when animal behaviour is developing, whether a lion pride is interacting, a cheetah is scanning the plains or elephants are travelling with young calves. Lunch will be enjoyed at an authorised picnic site before afternoon photography continues through open grasslands, woodland and seasonal water points. You will return to the lodge in the late afternoon to back up images, charge equipment and enjoy dinner.

The programme may concentrate on river environments for hippos, crocodiles, kingfishers and herons, wooded drainage lines for leopards and resting lions, or open plains for elephants, cheetahs and large herds. The additional day is also valuable for wide landscapes, environmental portraits, bird photography, storm skies, silhouettes and behaviour-focused images. Your guide will adjust the route around your remaining priorities rather than repeating the previous day unnecessarily. Lunch may be enjoyed as a picnic or at the lodge when accommodation location and the agreed schedule permit.
