Changing Highland Habitats

Our guide will collect you from JKIA, Wilson Airport or a confirmed Nairobi hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Travel 310–350 km through Thika, Karatina, Nanyuki and Isiolo, taking 5½–7 hours excluding traffic, lunch and comfort stops. The route passes cultivated highlands, wooded slopes and increasingly dry northern landscapes. Birding stops are made only where parking and roadside conditions are safe.

First Samburu Birding Drive

After lunch and check-in at your premium lodge or camp, leave at approximately 3:30 p.m. for a 2–2½-hour introductory drive. Explore open scrubland, riverine woodland and doum-palm habitat while looking for hornbills, rollers, bee-eaters, weavers and raptors. Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes and gerenuks may also be encountered. Return around sunset for dinner and your first checklist discussion.

Ewaso Nyiro Birding

Breakfast begins at approximately 6:00 a.m., followed by departure between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Search riverine woodland, rocky slopes and open bush for kingfishers, starlings, hornbills, doves, bustards and birds of prey. Our guide will use habitat, behaviour, calls and visible field characteristics to support identification without disturbing nesting or feeding birds.

Afternoon Field Observations

Lunch is served between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the lodge or an authorized picnic site. Continue birding during the cooler afternoon while also watching for elephants and northern herbivores around the Ewaso Nyiro ecosystem. Playback should be limited and avoided around sensitive species. Return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. to charge equipment, record confirmed observations and discuss the following morning’s priority species over dinner.

Final Northern Observations

When the transfer schedule permits, begin a short drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. Early activity may include francolins, doves, weavers, raptors and river-associated birds. Return for breakfast and check out between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. Binoculars and cameras should remain accessible but securely stored while the vehicle is moving.

Journey into the Rift Valley

Travel 330–360 km through Isiolo, Nanyuki and the Nyahururu region, requiring 6–8 hours excluding lunch and road delays. The landscape changes from dry northern scrub to productive highlands and Rift Valley scenery. Safe stops can provide opportunities to observe common highland birds, although reaching Lake Nakuru remains the day’s priority. Arrive during the late afternoon or early evening, enjoy dinner and prepare for an early national park entry.

Lake Nakuru Birding Safari

Enter Lake Nakuru National Park at approximately 6:30 a.m. for a 3–4-hour birding and wildlife drive. Explore woodland, grassland and accessible lakeshore habitat while looking for pelicans, cormorants, herons, raptors and scavenging birds. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with food availability, water chemistry and regional movement. The park may also reveal rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes and baboons.

Lake Naivasha by Boat

After breakfast or brunch, travel 75–100 km to Lake Naivasha in 1½–2½ hours. A confirmed 60–90-minute afternoon boat excursion may provide views of fish eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, cormorants and herons. The captain determines safe routes and viewing distances, particularly around hippos. Return to your premium accommodation before sunset, complete the day’s checklist and avoid unprotected shorelines after dark.

Final Lakeside Birding

Breakfast is served from approximately 6:30 a.m. Observe garden, woodland and shoreline birds from approved areas within the lodge grounds. A sunrise boat trip may replace the afternoon activity on Day 4 when confirmed and when wind conditions are suitable. Check out between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. after securing binoculars, cameras and field notes.

First Mara Birding Drive

Travel 220–260 km through Mai Mahiu and Narok, taking 4½–6½ hours excluding lunch and road conditions. After checking into your premium Mara property, leave at approximately 3:30 p.m. for an introductory drive. Begin searching for grassland birds, vultures, eagles, storks and species associated with scattered woodland. Return around sunset for dinner and preparation of the next day’s target list.

Early Grassland Search

Depart between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. after breakfast or with a packed meal. Explore open plains, seasonal waterways and woodland edges while looking for larks, pipits, bustards, ground hornbills, vultures and birds of prey. Identification depends on visibility, distance and plumage. Our driver will not leave permitted routes or disturb a bird merely to obtain a closer photograph.

River Corridors and Scavengers

Enjoy lunch at approximately 1:00 p.m. at an authorized picnic location. Continue toward riverine areas and wildlife concentrations that may attract raptors or scavenging birds. Mammal encounters may include elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos and predators, although none can be guaranteed. Return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner, equipment charging and a detailed checklist session while the observations remain fresh.

Exploring Another Habitat Zone

Leave at approximately 6:30 a.m. for an area not covered extensively on Day 6. The route will be selected according to recent observations, road conditions and seasonal habitat. Look for grassland specialists, water-associated birds, eagles, vultures and woodland species. Time will also be allowed for identifying smaller birds that ordinary wildlife itineraries may overlook.

Final Mara Checklist

Lunch is served between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the lodge or a designated picnic site. Continue birding until approximately 5:30 p.m., balancing photography, identification and broader wildlife observation. Return for your final Mara dinner and review the complete species list with our guide. Uncertain sightings should remain unconfirmed rather than being added simply to increase the final total.

Last Savannah Observations

When the Nairobi schedule permits, begin a short drive at approximately 6:30 a.m. This final outing may provide another opportunity to observe raptors, grassland birds or mammals in the cooler conditions. Return for breakfast and check out between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. after checking the room and charging areas for binoculars, batteries and memory cards.

Return through the Rift Valley

Travel 255–300 km through Narok and the Great Rift Valley, taking 5–6½ hours excluding lunch, road conditions and Nairobi traffic. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or your confirmed Nairobi hotel. International flights should be scheduled for late evening. Your premium birdwatching journey concludes with observations from northern dry country, Rift Valley lakes and the wildlife-rich Maasai Mara plains.
