Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Bogoria – The Family Adventure Begins

Nairobi to Lake Bogoria – The Family Adventure Begins

Nairobi Departure

Our guide will collect your family between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. from JKIA or a confirmed Nairobi hotel. Child seats must be requested and approved before arrival. Travel 270–300 km through the highlands, Nakuru and Marigat, taking 5–6½ hours excluding lunch, traffic and family comfort stops. Children should carry water, a light jacket and a small activity bag within easy reach.

Discovering Lake Bogoria

After lunch and room allocation, visit Lake Bogoria around 3:30 p.m. The dramatic lake, hot springs and escarpment create an exciting first lesson in Rift Valley geography. Flamingos and other waterbirds may be present, although numbers vary. Children must remain beside an adult and follow the guide’s instructions because geothermal ground can be unstable and dangerously hot. Return before darkness for dinner, a simple wildlife briefing and an early night at your premium accommodation.

Family Nature Morning

Breakfast is served around 6:00 a.m. before a gentle morning excursion. The guide will explain geothermal activity, bird movement and safe wildlife observation using age-appropriate language. Families should remain on permitted routes and never approach hot springs for photographs. Return to the accommodation, check rooms and leave between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m.

Lake Nakuru Safari

Travel 110–130 km through Marigat, taking 2½–3½ hours excluding lunch and family stops. After check-in and rest, begin the game drive around 3:30 p.m. Lake Nakuru may reveal rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, baboons and numerous birds. Encourage children to use a checklist rather than calling loudly when they spot an animal. Return near sunset for dinner. Adults must supervise children around pools, balconies and unfenced accommodation grounds.

Final Nakuru Drive

Depart around 6:30 a.m. for a short wildlife drive before breakfast. Cooler conditions may provide active animals and comfortable temperatures for younger travellers. The guide will stop when safe, allowing children to observe behaviour through binoculars. Return for breakfast and check out around 9:00 a.m., confirming that toys, chargers and medication have been collected.

First Mara Experience

Travel 230–270 km through Mau Narok or another suitable road, requiring 5–6½ hours excluding lunch, road conditions and family stops. After arrival and room allocation, rest before a short game drive around 4:00 p.m. when practical. The Mara may reveal elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and predators, but no sighting is promised. Return before darkness for dinner and a clear safety briefing about remaining with adults inside unfenced safari properties.

Maasai Mara – A Full-Day Family Wildlife Safari

Savannah Discovery

Breakfast begins around 6:00 a.m., followed by departure between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Explore the Mara’s plains and riverine habitats while the guide explains animal families, tracks, food relationships and conservation in language suited to the group. Children must remain seated while the vehicle is moving and should never lean outside doors or windows.

Picnic and Afternoon Safari

Enjoy a picnic lunch at an authorized site between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Parents should supervise handwashing, food disposal and movement around the picnic area. Continue wildlife viewing during the afternoon, allowing comfort breaks wherever permitted. Migration herds and predators remain unpredictable. If younger children become tired, a shortened drive may be discussed, although lodge distance and entry conditions can limit immediate changes. Return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner and family time.

Return for breakfast and check out between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. Adults should verify passports, medicines, favourite toys and electronic devices before luggage is loaded.

Lakeside Arrival

Travel 220–250 km through Narok and Mai Mahiu, taking 4½–6 hours excluding lunch, traffic and family stops. Arrive at Lake Naivasha during the afternoon and enjoy time within designated lodge grounds. Children must not approach the shoreline alone because hippos and other wildlife may move through unfenced properties. Swimming is permitted only in an approved pool under direct adult supervision. Dinner is normally served around 7:30 p.m.

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli – Boat Adventure and Southern Journey

Family Boat Excursion

After breakfast around 6:30 a.m., an optional 60–90-minute boat trip may be arranged. The operator must supply correctly fitting life jackets, and parents remain responsible for their children. Wind, water conditions, minimum-age rules and boarding arrangements determine whether the activity can operate. Families preferring not to participate can enjoy the lodge safely.

Transfer to Amboseli

Check out and travel 330–370 km through Mai Mahiu, Nairobi’s outskirts and Emali, requiring 6–8 hours excluding lunch, traffic and comfort stops. Pack snacks, water and activities for the journey. Arrive during the late afternoon and proceed to your premium accommodation. A short game drive is included only when daylight and entry arrangements permit. Dinner follows, with an early bedtime recommended before the full Amboseli safari.

Kilimanjaro Country

Leave between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. after an early breakfast arrangement. Clear weather may reveal Mount Kilimanjaro, while the plains and wetlands can support elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and abundant birds. The guide will explain how animals depend on water and why families must maintain respectful viewing distances.

Wildlife Learning and Fun

Lunch is served between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the lodge or an authorized picnic site. Continue exploring during the afternoon, using animal checklists, quiet observation and short question sessions to keep younger travellers interested. Specific animals and mountain views cannot be guaranteed. Children must never feed wildlife or throw objects from the vehicle. Return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner, a final family discussion and preparation for departure.

Amboseli to Nairobi – Final Family Memories

Farewell Game Drive

A short drive may begin around 6:30 a.m. when the return schedule permits. Enjoy a final opportunity to observe elephants, birds and the changing morning landscape. Alternatively, have a relaxed breakfast at the lodge. Check out between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., making sure children have collected their personal belongings.

Nairobi Drop-Off

Travel 200–240 km through Emali to Nairobi, taking 4–5½ hours excluding lunch, traffic and family comfort stops. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or a confirmed Nairobi hotel. Families should not book a tight international connection because children’s stops and city traffic can extend the transfer. A late-evening flight or additional Nairobi night provides a safer and more comfortable conclusion.

RELATED FAQS ABOUT 8 Days Premium Family Safari from Nairobi: Kenya’s Lakes and Wildlife

    1. What ages are suitable for this family safari?

Children of different ages can participate, but long road transfers must be considered carefully. Parents should share the children’s ages before booking so rooms, seats, meals and daily pacing can be assessed.

    2. Are child car seats available?

Seats may be requested, but the child’s age, height and weight must be supplied in advance. Availability and compatibility with the safari vehicle must be confirmed rather than assumed.

    3. Can the game drives be shortened for young children?

Private transport provides useful flexibility. However, the distance from the lodge, gate rules and the needs of everyone in the family can affect how quickly the schedule can change.

    4. Are family rooms guaranteed?

Only after the selected property confirms them in writing. Family-room layouts vary, and some lodges use interconnected rooms or separate units rather than one large room.

    5. Is the Lake Naivasha boat trip safe for children?

Suitability depends on age, life-jacket size, weather, boarding arrangements and operator rules. Parents may decline the activity if they are uncomfortable with the conditions.

    6. How are children supervised at safari lodges?

Parents or guardians remain responsible at all times. Lodge staff and safari guides do not replace childcare providers, particularly around pools, balconies, wildlife and unfenced grounds.

    7. Can children receive special meals?

Many properties can prepare simple child-friendly meals when notified early. Allergies, intolerances and preferred meal times should be submitted in writing before travel.

    8. What should children bring inside the vehicle?

Pack water, sun protection, a light jacket, binoculars, a wildlife notebook and quiet activities for transfers. Electronic entertainment should be used with headphones.

    9. Can a birthday be celebrated during the safari?

Yes. A cake, decoration or family dinner may be requested subject to availability and additional cost. Provide the correct name, age and preferred date well in advance.

    10. Are malaria precautions required?

Families should obtain personalized medical advice from a qualified travel-health professional. The operator cannot prescribe medication or replace professional medical guidance.
