Day 1: Nairobi to Maasai Mara – The Great Rift Valley Road

Nairobi to Maasai Mara – The Great Rift Valley Road

Escarpment and Narok Journey

Our guide will collect you from JKIA or a confirmed Nairobi hotel between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Travel 255–300 km through the Great Rift Valley and Narok, with the exact distance determined by the selected Mara gate and accommodation. The drive normally takes 5½–7 hours excluding traffic, lunch and comfort stops. Enjoy the changing scenery as Nairobi’s urban landscape gives way to escarpments, farmland and open pastoral country.

Entering Maasai Mara

Stop for lunch along the journey or arrive for a late lodge lunch, depending on road conditions. After check-in and a short rest, begin your first Maasai Mara game drive at approximately 3:30 p.m. Search the savannah for elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes and predators without treating any sighting as guaranteed. Return around sunset for dinner and your premium overnight.

Day 2: Maasai Mara – A Full Day on the Savannah

Maasai Mara – A Full Day on the Savannah

Roads through Big-Game Country

After breakfast at approximately 6:00 a.m., leave the lodge between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. Our safari vehicle follows authorized tracks through grasslands, riverine areas and seasonal waterways. Possible wildlife includes lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas and large herbivore herds. Stops are selected according to wildlife movement, road conditions and park regulations.

Picnic and Afternoon Exploration

Enjoy a picnic lunch at an authorized location between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Continue across another section of the reserve, allowing sufficient time for photography and careful observation of animal behaviour. Migration herds can enter Maasai Mara seasonally, although their location depends on rainfall and grazing conditions. The full-day activity lasts around 10–11 hours including lunch and observation stops. Return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner, relaxation and your second premium Mara overnight.

Day 3: Maasai Mara – Deeper into the Reserve

Maasai Mara – Deeper into the Reserve

A Different Mara Sector

Depart around 6:30 a.m. after breakfast or with a packed breakfast prepared by the lodge. The additional day gives our guide greater freedom to explore a different sector rather than repeating the previous route. Search open plains, river corridors and wooded areas for predators, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, raptors and other wildlife. The chosen road will depend on recent sightings and track conditions.

Unhurried Road Safari

Lunch is served around 1:00 p.m. at an approved picnic site. Continue the afternoon safari while respecting viewing distances and avoiding unnecessary crowding around animals. Our driver-guide will explain how roads, seasonal rivers and grazing areas influence wildlife movement through the ecosystem. Arrive back at the lodge before 6:00 p.m., enjoy dinner and prepare your luggage for the following day’s Rift Valley road transfer.

Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru – Across the Kenyan Highlands

Farewell Drive through the Mara

A final short game drive may start around 6:30 a.m. when park-entry arrangements and the transfer schedule permit. Return for breakfast, collect your luggage and complete check-out between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. Our guide will brief you about the road, planned comfort stops and lunch arrangements before leaving the Maasai Mara area.

Road to Lake Nakuru

Travel 230–270 km through Narok and Mau Narok, taking 5–6½ hours excluding lunch and road delays. The scenery changes from open pastoral plains to cultivated highlands and Rift Valley landscapes. Arrive in the Lake Nakuru area during the late afternoon and check into your premium lodge or camp. If the property is unfenced, follow all escort instructions after darkness. Dinner is normally served between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha – Wildlife and Lakeside Roads

Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha – Wildlife and Lakeside Roads

Lake Nakuru Game Drive

Enter Lake Nakuru National Park around 6:30 a.m. and spend approximately 3–4 hours exploring woodland, grassland, rocky areas and the changing lakeshore. Search for white and black rhinos, buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, baboons, antelopes and waterbirds. Flamingos may occur, but their numbers change with water levels, food conditions and regional movement.

Short Road to Naivasha

After breakfast or brunch, travel 75–100 km to Lake Naivasha, requiring 1½–2½ hours depending on the accommodation locations and traffic. Check into your premium lakeside property and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. A 60–90-minute boat excursion can be arranged when included and when water conditions are safe. Life jackets are compulsory, and guests must avoid unprotected shorelines after dark because hippos may leave the water.

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli – Kenya’s Changing Landscapes

Freshwater Morning

Breakfast begins around 6:30 a.m. You may enjoy an approved boat safari, relax within the lodge grounds or depart directly when a longer road day is preferred. Boat passengers may observe hippos, African fish eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, cormorants and herons, although individual species cannot be guaranteed. The captain may cancel the trip if wind or water conditions become unsafe.

Long Road to Amboseli

Check out and travel 310–360 km through Mai Mahiu, Nairobi’s outskirts and Emali. The journey requires 6–8 hours excluding traffic, lunch and comfort stops. Carry water and any essential medication inside your hand luggage. Arrive at your premium Amboseli lodge or camp during the late afternoon. A short wildlife drive is possible only when entry arrangements and daylight allow. Finish the day with dinner and rest.

Day 7: Amboseli – Kilimanjaro and Elephant Country

Amboseli – Kilimanjaro and Elephant Country

Plains beneath Africa’s Highest Mountain

Leave between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. after an early breakfast or with a packed meal. When clouds clear, the plains can offer views of Mount Kilimanjaro, although visibility remains unpredictable. Drive through open grassland, acacia woodland and spring-fed wetland habitats while searching for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, predators and numerous bird species.

Full-Day Amboseli Road Safari

Lunch is served between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the lodge or an authorized picnic location. Continue along designated park tracks, allowing time to watch elephant families and other wildlife without blocking their direction of movement. Amboseli’s dusty plains and productive wetlands create excellent landscape contrasts for photography. After approximately 10 hours of wildlife exploration including the lunch break, return between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. for dinner and your final premium safari night.

Return for breakfast, check your room carefully and complete lodge check-out between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. Passports, cameras and medication should remain in accessible hand luggage.

Return Road to Nairobi

Travel 200–240 km through Emali and the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor, taking 4–5½ hours excluding lunch, traffic and comfort stops. The road journey completes a varied circuit through Kenya’s savannahs, highlands, freshwater environments and wetlands. Drop-off is available at JKIA, Wilson Airport or a confirmed Nairobi hotel. RELATED FAQS ABOUT 8 Days Premium Kenya Road Safari from Nairobi

Why choose a road safari instead of flying?

A road safari reveals the landscapes and communities between the parks while keeping the same vehicle and guide throughout the journey. It may also be more flexible for luggage and scheduled comfort stops.

    Is the safari vehicle private?

Private transport can be arranged exclusively for your booking. The quotation should clearly state whether you are reserving a private safari or joining other travellers.

Are the roads comfortable throughout the tour?

Major transfer roads are paved, but park tracks and roads near remote properties may be rough, dusty or muddy. Conditions change with weather, maintenance and traffic.

How long is the longest driving day?

Lake Naivasha to Amboseli is normally the longest transfer, requiring 6–8 hours excluding lunch, traffic and stops. Departure timing is planned carefully to avoid arriving after darkness.

Can we stop for photographs along the road?

Stops are made only at locations considered safe and legally accessible. The driver will not stop on dangerous bends, busy highways or restricted private land.

    What luggage is suitable?

Soft-sided bags are recommended because they fit more easily inside safari vehicles. Confirm the permitted weight and leave unnecessary hard suitcases at your Nairobi hotel when possible.

    Are comfort stops provided?

Yes. Our guide plans suitable fuel, washroom and meal stops, although facilities may be basic on remote sections of the route.

Can one transfer be replaced with a flight?

Yes, selected sectors may be upgraded to scheduled or charter flights. This changes the price, baggage limit, transfers and overall road-safari experience.

Will road construction affect the itinerary?

It can. Construction, traffic, rainfall and temporary diversions may increase driving time, so the guide may adjust departure or lunch arrangements.

    Where does the safari end?

The normal ending points are JKIA, Wilson Airport or a confirmed Nairobi hotel. Your final destination and flight time should be shared before booking.
