Our 12-day private family Kilimanjaro Machame Route and Zanzibar tour is designed for families who want an active holiday followed by comfortable island relaxation. We begin in Moshi with a seven-day camping trek, supported by our mountain crew, before arranging the flight to Zanzibar for cultural visits, nature walks and beach time. We discuss the ages, experience and readiness of each family member before confirming the climb, while midrange hotel arrangements in Moshi and Zanzibar reflect your preferred family room setup and availability.
Altitude: Approximately 1,800 m to 2,835 m
Distance and time: Around 35 km / 22 miles by road, 45–60 minutes; approximately 11 km / 6.8 miles trekking, 5–7 hours
Attractions: Mountain rainforest, moss-covered trees and forest birdlife
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Machame Camp
Our team welcomes your family at the Moshi hotel and transfers you to Machame Gate for registration. Before setting off, our guide explains the walking routine and makes sure everyone understands how to communicate when they need a break.
The rainforest offers plenty to notice along the trail, helping the first day feel like a shared discovery rather than simply a distance to cover. At camp, we prepare dinner while your family settles into the tents and talks through the day’s experiences.
Altitude: Approximately 2,835 m to 3,750 m
Distance and time: Approximately 5 km / 3.1 miles trekking, 4–6 hours
Attractions: Heather, rocky slopes, open viewpoints and the Shira Plateau
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Shira Cave Camp
After breakfast, we continue uphill as the trees become smaller and the views open across the mountain. Our guide explains the changing surroundings in simple terms, giving everyone something to enjoy between the steeper sections.
We keep the family’s pace steady and make sure quieter members also have space to say how they feel. At Shira Cave Camp, the afternoon is reserved mainly for eating, resting and preparing warmer clothing for the evening.
Altitude: Approximately 3,750 m to 4,600 m, descending to about 3,900 m
Distance and time: Approximately 10 km / 6.2 miles trekking, 6–8 hours
Attractions: Lava Tower, volcanic rocks, high mountain valleys and giant groundsels
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Barranco Camp
We guide your family towards Lava Tower across open ground, with breaks organised around the conditions and each person’s energy. The route then descends to Barranco, making today a clear example of climbing higher during the day and sleeping lower.
This longer stage calls for patience, and our guides encourage honest communication rather than competition between family members. Reaching camp brings time to eat together and appreciate the effort that everyone has contributed.
Altitude: Approximately 3,900 m to 3,995 m, with intermediate climbs and descents
Distance and time: Approximately 5 km / 3.1 miles trekking, 4–5 hours
Attractions: Barranco Wall, mountain viewpoints and Karanga Valley
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Karanga Camp
Our guides explain the Barranco Wall before leading the family through its rocky sections. Some places require hands for balance, so we concentrate on careful movement and clear guidance rather than rushing.
The trail beyond the wall continues through a series of rises and dips before reaching Karanga. Once at camp, your family has time to rest while our crew prepares meals and our guide discusses the following day.
Altitude: Approximately 3,995 m to 4,673 m
Distance and time: Approximately 4 km / 2.5 miles trekking, 3–4 hours
Attractions: Exposed volcanic ground, high mountain scenery and views towards Mawenzi
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Barafu Camp
Today’s shorter distance helps reserve energy for the summit attempt, although the altitude still makes the walk demanding. We lead your family slowly across the open slopes and keep unnecessary activity to a minimum after arrival.
Our guide checks each person’s summit equipment and explains the night’s plan clearly. We also make sure everyone understands that turning back is a responsible decision whenever the guide considers it necessary.
Altitude: Approximately 4,673 m to 5,895 m, descending to about 3,100 m
Distance and time: Approximately 17 km / 10.6 miles trekking, 12–18 hours overall
Attractions: Stella Point, the summit crater rim and Uhuru Peak
Accommodation: Mountain camping at Mweka Camp
We begin the summit attempt during the night, with our guides assessing each family member as the climb progresses. Encouragement matters, but we never make reaching the summit a test of who is strongest or most determined.
If conditions allow, the summit offers a powerful moment of shared pride before the long descent begins. We return through Barafu for food and a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp with close attention to tired legs and changing energy levels.
Altitude: Approximately 3,100 m to 1,640 m, followed by the return to Moshi
Distance and time: Approximately 10 km / 6.2 miles trekking, 3–4 hours; around 25 km / 15.5 miles by road, 45–60 minutes
Attractions: Forest paths and the completion of the seven-day trek
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Moshi
After breakfast, our guide leads the family down the final forest trail, allowing time to manage slippery sections carefully. The descent is a chance to reflect on the landscapes and small achievements of the past week.
At Mweka Gate, we complete the formalities before transferring your family to Moshi. Comfortable beds and time to wash and repack make the evening a useful pause before flying to Zanzibar.
Altitude: Approximately 900 m in Moshi to near sea level in Zanzibar
Distance and time: Around 45 km / 28 miles by road, 1–1.5 hours; approximately 1–1.5 hours on a direct flight
Attractions: Flight views when clear and the beginning of your family beach stay
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Zanzibar
We collect your family from the hotel and transfer you to Kilimanjaro Airport according to the confirmed flight schedule. Our team helps coordinate the transition from trekking arrangements to the next part of your holiday.
In Zanzibar, we welcome you at the airport and transfer you to your selected hotel. The remainder of the day is kept flexible so everyone can rest, settle into their rooms and enjoy the change of surroundings.
Altitude: Near sea level and low inland elevations
Distance and time: Approximately 2–4 km / 1.2–2.5 miles walking; around 5–7 hours for the combined visits, excluding longer hotel transfers
Attractions: Historic streets, local markets, carved doors and familiar spices growing on plants
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Zanzibar
Our guide introduces Stone Town through stories and details that make its history easier for the family to understand. We include opportunities to pause in the shade and adjust the walking rhythm to the group.
At the spice farm, the visit becomes more hands-on through looking at and smelling the plants introduced by the local guide. This gives the day a practical learning element while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable.
Altitude: Sea level
Distance and time: Around 6 km / 3.7 miles to Prison Island from Stone Town, commonly 20–30 minutes by boat; approximately 5–7 hours overall
Attractions: Giant tortoises, boat travel, sandbank scenery and beach activities
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Zanzibar
Our team arranges the boat excursion with attention to the family’s needs, including suitable life jackets and clear guidance before boarding. On Prison Island, we introduce the tortoises and explain how to observe them respectfully.
When conditions permit, we continue to Nakupenda for time on the sandbank and swimming in suitable areas. Children remain under their accompanying adults’ supervision, while the boat team manages the day around tides and sea conditions.
Altitude: Low coastal elevations to sea level
Distance and time: Approximately 1–2 km / 0.6–1.2 miles of forest walking; roughly 5–7 hours for the day, depending on hotel location
Attractions: Red colobus monkeys, forest habitats, mangroves and Jambiani beach
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Zanzibar
We begin with a guided forest visit, encouraging the family to watch quietly and notice the animals’ natural behaviour. Our guide keeps explanations accessible and helps everyone understand why feeding or approaching wildlife is inappropriate.
We then continue to Jambiani for a less structured afternoon beside the coast. A beach walk and lunch stop provide time to enjoy being together without another demanding activity.
Altitude: Sea level
Distance and time: No scheduled touring distance; a full day at leisure
Attractions: Beach time, coastal walks and hotel facilities
Accommodation: Midrange hotel in Zanzibar, according to the confirmed booking
We leave the final day free so your family can choose how to spend it. Some may prefer a quiet morning, while others may want a beach walk or time enjoying the hotel’s available facilities.
Our team can discuss optional activities if your family would like an additional outing, with arrangements and charges agreed separately. Otherwise, this is a day to rest and enjoy the shared memories your journey has created.
