The 10-day Kilimanjaro hiking expedition via the Northern Circuit route is a thrilling journey that takes adventurers through some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes on the continent. As the newest and longest route, it offers a unique experience that combines the best of other routes while providing more acclimatization time.
After breakfast at your hotel, you'll be picked up and taken to the Londorossi Gate at 2,250 meters above sea level. Once the necessary registration is completed, your adventure begins with a hike through the dense rainforest to the Big Tree Camp (2,780 m). An armed ranger will accompany you for the first two days due to the presence of wild game in the area. You'll spend the night in tents at the Big Tree Camp.
Leaving the rainforest, you'll enter a savannah with tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. The trail takes you through lush rolling hills and streams until you reach the Shira 1 Camp, where you'll catch your first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.
Today's hike takes you to an altitude of 3,850 meters with a steady uphill hike. The terrain is characterized by moor and heathland, and you might spot buffalo, dik-dik, and klipspringer grazing in the area. You'll reach Shira 2 Camp, also known as Shira Huts, where you'll enjoy a hot lunch.
You'll begin early with a challenging day, reaching an altitude of 4,600 meters at the base of the famous Lava Tower. After acclimatizing for one to two hours, you'll descend to Moir Hut Camp for the night.
Today's hike takes you out of Moir Valley and to the summit of Lent Hills (4,375 m) for some stunning views. Continuing eastwards around the northern circuit trail, you'll arrive at Buffalo Camp (4,020 m) with sweeping views of the Kenyan plains below.
A hike to the top of 'Buffalo Ridge' awaits, followed by a journey through a landscape with increasingly sparse vegetation. Your destination is the Third Cave Camp at 3,800 meters.
You'll traverse the so-called "saddle," a lava-flow connecting Mount Kilimanjaro's peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo. After approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, you'll reach the School Hut and prepare for an early start to the summit the next day.
A long and steep ascent takes you to Gillman’s Point, where you traverse the crater rim and descend slightly into the crater to reach Crater Camp, offering excellent views of surrounding glaciers.
The most challenging part of the hike awaits as you begin your push to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After reaching the summit, you'll descend to Mweka Camp, passing through various habitats along the way.
Your final leg includes a gentle descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your driver will be waiting to take you back to Moshi. After a warm shower and some rest, you can relax, unwind, or celebrate your achievement.
